Probably the biggest difference in professional baseball in Japan and in America is the minor league system. In America each team has 5 minor league teams. The teams are ranked from the youngest and least experienced players playing for a rookie league team to the oldest and most experienced players playing AAA minor league baseball. The players compete against players of their own level and when they have proven themselves they are moved up one level to the next highest one. When they have shown the ability to compete at the AAA level they are promoted to the Major League team.
If they can not prove they can compete at their current level they go back to the next lower level. When it is obvious that they have reached their highest level of competition and are not in the Major Leagues they are released. This system allows the young players to play and develop along with their peers.
In Japan there is only one minor league team per professional team. The youngest players try to develop their talent while playing against much older and much more experienced players. This is very difficult for many young players and many get discouraged and often end up not playing in many games their first few years as a professional.
A player must play games to develop the baseball skills necessary to perform well at a high level of play. Our system in Japan retards the growth of many young players simply because there is only one team and the older players must play to be ready for an immediate call from the major league team. And there are only 100 games to play.
I believe there should be 2 minor league teams for each major league team here in Japan. One team would be composed of young players who have never played in the major leagues and they would play games against each other. If a player proves he is ready to move to the next level he could then be promoted during the season.
The other team would be for the older and more experienced players who are there in the minors getting ready to help the major league team during the season. These games could be played at the major league stadium before regular games. The manager and coaches could see the minor games and know when a player is ready to help the major team. I would propose that some of the coaches from the major league team also coach this team as well as have a young manager so the team could develop young managers as well for they would be taught by the major league manager.
I think this is both a good thing and a bad thing for Japanese baseball. Japanese professional baseball has not done a good job developing young players and young managers. This type of minor league system would help do both. The fans could also get a special day at the stadium if the wanted to come early and see the minor league team play a game and then be there for the major league game later that night. This would require a little extra spending from each team but the expense would be paid off with the development of an increasing pool of capable young layers and managers.
